Bhubaneswar, May 27: Class XII examinees of the CBSE in the state fared well than their counterparts in Bengal and Chhattisgarh yet again by recording a pass percentage of 85.51 per cent.
Bengal secured 83.22 per cent and Chhattisgarh aggregated 81.93 per cent. The results were declared today.
Schools affiliated to the board in the Bhubaneswar region, which includes the three states, also surpassed their pass score of previous year with 85.81 per cent students clearing the exams. Last year, the success rate was 84 per cent.
A total of 39,780 students had taken the exams from this region — 9,535 from Odisha, 13,318 from Chhattisgarh and 17,727 from Bengal.
This time, too, girls fared better than boys with a pass percentage of 89.08 per cent. Boys recorded a pass score of 83.37 per cent.
The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) outperformed the Kendriya Vidyalayas (KV) and private schools. At 96.82 per cent, the pass rate of the JNVs has been noticeably better than that of the KVs and private schools, which reported pass percentages of 94.32 per cent and 85.28 per cent, respectively.
Attributing the success of the JNVs to “maximum study hours” and the “study environment”, regional officer of the CBSE-Bhubaneswar region A.S. Verma said: “Since these are residential schools situated in remote areas, the students put more time to study. They have little contact with the outside world. The teachers, too, stay on the same premises and can reach out to the students and help them with their lessons. More important is the fact that most students of the JNVs were first generation learners. This makes the performance even more impressive.”
In private schools, low grades could be attributed to lack of proper monitoring by guardians, Verma said.
“After school, these students have many other activities to keep themselves busy. The KVs, too, face a similar situation as most schools are located in towns and cities,” he said.
Only six per cent students have failed and as many as 7.7 per cent students have been placed in compartment and will have to re-appear the exams. Results of CBSE Class X exams will be announced in a couple of days, said Verma.
He said the delay was caused because of increase in the number of schools and students. “This has made the evaluation process very lengthy,” he said.
